Sustainability has now become the baseline buyers expect. As a globally recognised assessment framework, EcoVadis gives organisations a trusted, standardised way to measure, benchmark, and improve their sustainability performance.
Learn how the EcoVadis assessment works, what companies can expect during the assessment process, and why a stronger score can translate into real business value.
What is EcoVadis?
EcoVadis is a global standard for business sustainability ratings, operating in 180+ countries and 230+ industries. The EcoVadis assessment is an evidence-based sustainability evaluation of a company’s policies, actions, results, verification, and accountability across four themes:
- Environment
- Labor and Human Rights
- Ethics
- Sustainable Procurement
Tailored to the company’s industry sector, size, and geographic location, the EcoVadis assessment ensures that companies are only assessed on criteria that are relevant.
By comprehensively examining a company’s operations, EcoVadis provides a rigorous and trustworthy rating.
The EcoVadis Assessment Process – Evidence-based Methodology
The evidence-based methodology requires companies to back every claim with documentation – environmental policies, emissions records, certifications, health and safety procedures, DEI initiatives, anti-corruption policies, supplier codes of conduct, sustainability reports, audits, and training records. The platform also pulls in outside sources, like media sentiment analysis and ongoing news tracking, for a fuller picture of your sustainability performance.
To get started, register with basic information about your business. From there, fill out a questionnaire tailored to your company, uploading supporting documents as you go.
Upon submitting your answers and supporting documentation, EcoVadis’ team of expert sustainability analysts will review thoroughly and provide a detailed scorecard outlining your performance. Depending on how you score, you may be awarded a medal based on your performance.
EcoVadis Medals & Badges
EcoVadis assesses companies on a 100-point scale, and medals are awarded based on how a company’s score ranks relative to all companies assessed across all industries – rewarding not just a high score, but strong relative performance. The eligibility criteria for medals and badges are reviewed periodically.
EcoVadis Medals
EcoVadis medals represent a mark of excellence, awarded to companies that demonstrate a robust sustainability management system and rank among the top tiers of all businesses assessed.
Platinum – Awarded to the top 1% of all rated companies, representing the highest level of sustainability performance recognised by EcoVadis.
Gold – Awarded to top 5% of all rated companies.
Silver – Awarded to companies that place within the top 15%.
Bronze – Recognises companies in the top 35%.
To qualify for any medal, companies must achieve a minimum score of 30 across all four assessment themes, ensuring well-rounded performance across all key areas.
EcoVadis Badges
For companies that do not qualify for a medal, EcoVadis badges are awarded based on specific score-based thresholds, recognising companies that demonstrate meaningful performance or improvement.
Committed – Awarded to companies with a minimum score of 45, representing ‘Good’ performance in the EcoVadis methodology.
Fast Mover – Awarded to companies with a score between 34-44 with a minimum 6-point improvement compared to the previous assessment in an 18-month period.
These medals and badges are valid for twelve months, matching the validity of the corresponding EcoVadis Scorecard, and applicable only to the assessed entity and not to any affiliated entity.

Common Challenges Companies Face
For many companies, an EcoVadis assessment request from a corporate buyer often marks the start of their EcoVadis journey. From understanding the scoring methodology to preparing supporting documentation and answering complex questions, the process can be challenging and time-consuming, especially without prior experience.
A common pitfall we are seeing on the ground: businesses answer conservatively when unsure of eligibility or lacking documentation, losing points for initiatives that exist but aren’t properly documented. The result? A lower EcoVadis score, even when the underlying practices are actually there.
This challenge largely stems from sustainability data being scattered across questionnaires, standards, and business functions. Without a centralised ESG reporting process, companies face duplicated work, inconsistent data, and outdated documents.
