Asia’s leading Environmental, Social, and Governance (‘ESG’) data and technology solutions company, ESGpedia Pte Ltd (‘ESGpedia’), has empowered JCI Taipei, Taipei International Youth Chamber of Commerce, to calculate and report the event carbon emissions for the 2nd Asia Pacific Young Leaders Summit, held on 27 October 2024. Organised by JCI Taipei, the summit was graced by the Mayor of Taipei City, Mr. Chiang Wan An, and the Department of Environmental Protection of Taipei City, who shared updates on Taipei City’s Sustainable Policy Actions. Regional JCI chapter members from over 12 cities in Asia[1] also flew in to join the event.
Through a fully digitalised greenhouse gas (‘GHG’) calculation and reporting process on ESGpedia, JCI Taipei was able to account for the full GHG emissions of the event. With attendees flying in from other countries for the summit, this includes GHG emissions from the attendees’ travel and hotel stay, to operations at the event venue, food and beverage value chain, as well as waste disposal. Using the relevant activity data and the comprehensive base of over 280,000 emissions factors available on the platform, ESGpedia was able to swiftly generate an event carbon emissions report in accordance with international standards for JCI Taipei, to transparently and credibly showcase its sustainability effort.
To make the event carbon neutral, the event emissions of the 2nd Asia Pacific Young Leaders Summit were offsetted through the purchase of carbon credits.
With ESGpedia today empowering corporates and SMEs in their carbon accounting journey on the organisation and project/asset-level, this marks the expansion of the platform’s capabilities to cover carbon emissions calculation and reporting for Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (‘MICE’) events. With rising sustainability regulations for the MICE sector and increasing demands for businesses to implement emission reduction strategies, the service aims to help corporates and organisations better manage their emissions.
The latest development marks progress in the partnership between ESGpedia and JCI Taipei. Earlier in April 2024, ESGpedia first joined forces with JCI Taipei to empower corporate sustainability and sustainability reporting among Taiwanese businesses and manufacturing supply chains.
As part of the partnership, JCI Taipei has also since successfully produced their first organisation-level GHG emissions report through ESGpedia. The GHG emissions report generated through ESGpedia is in accordance with international standards such as the GHG Protocol and ISO14064 methodologies, to ensure credibility and accuracy. The report signifies the first of more yearly sustainability reports to come for JCI Taipei and the regional JCI chapter members, representing JCI’s commitment towards sustainability and transparency by reporting its GHG emissions annually.
Benson Ying, President at JCI Taipei at JCI Taipei, said: “JCI Taipei is delighted to have generated our first Sustainability Report baselining our GHG emissions, as a commitment towards sustainability. We hope this can act as the catalyst to spur other youth organizations in the Asia-Pacific region towards accounting for their emissions and reporting transparently, to be more in line with the United Nations SDGs goals, especially items 11, 13, and 17.
Additionally, the generation of the event carbon emission report for the 2nd Asia Pacific Young Leaders Summit was greatly beneficial in helping us better manage our event emissions, from taking the necessary steps to try to reduce it, and offsetting what is unavoidable via carbon credits, so as to minimise harmful environmental impact.”
Benjamin Soh, Founder and Managing Director at ESGpedia, said: “As the global conversation around sustainability grows, there is increasing stakeholder demand for businesses to better manage their emissions comprehensively, including accounting for carbon footprint from events. To help the regional MICE industry reduce the environmental impact of events and align with rising sustainability regulations, ESGpedia is excited to expand our carbon accounting and reporting capabilities, to help organisations calculate and report their event emissions. We have successfully empowered JCI Taipei to generate an event carbon emissions report for the 2nd Asia Pacific Young Leaders Summit, to enable them to take action towards achieving carbon neutrality.“
As a next step, ESGpedia seeks to expand its partnership with JCI, to help the other JCI chapter members in the region navigate the evolving regulatory landscape and take the first step towards calculating and reporting their GHG emissions.
[1] The 12 regional JCI chapter members attending the summit include JCI Taipei, JCI Osaka, JCI Kaizuka, JCI Quezon City Capital, JCI Singapore, JCI Kitakyushu, JCI Seoul, JCI Tokyo, JCI Ulaanbaatar, JCI Hong Kong, JCI Saigon, and JCI Batavia.
